Here’s Everything You Need to Know to Become a Copywriter

Become a Copywriter – That caught your attention didn’t it?  Of course it did, you’re still reading! Copywriting is all about Aida.  Aida is not some sort of Goddess of copywriting, although if we had a goddess, Aida is what she would be called.  Aida stands for Action, Interest, Desire, Action.  Let me explain how I achieved that with my title and first two sentences.

The action I wanted of you is that you started reading my article.  I managed that (presuming you’re still reading now).  Then, I wanted you to be interested in reading beyond the title.  Hence, I put a funny sentence in there that made you want to read a little bit more (desire).  Now, all I need is to get you to have another action.

I won’t be telling what that one is, but if I’m lucky, you’ll perform the action that I want you to perform.  I am a woman of my word, however, and I promised to tell you all you need to know about copywriting.  I’ve kind of achieved that already, but here are some more details.

Work For The Man Or Work For You?

First, you need to decide who you want to work for.  There are pros and cons to working for the man or working for yourself and it is up to you and only you to decide which one is best for you.  Ok, let’s have a look:

  • If you work for the man, you have a steady income.  If you work for yourself, you won’t know for sure how much you make every month.  But, by working for yourself, you have the potential of making a lot more.
  • If you work for the man, you work in an office and only have to advertise one company.  If you work for yourself, you’ll have to come up with sales pitches for hundreds of different businesses and write about things you may have no interest in.  However, if you work for yourself, you can also get some seriously interesting articles and a whole lot of variety.
  • If you work for the man, you get given your work and you’re set.  If you work for yourself, you’ll have to scour the market hoping to find someone that wants you to work for them.  But, if you work for yourself, you can pick and choose your clients, particularly once you are established.

What About Education?

You don’t technically need an education.  However, if you’re going to write in English, your standard of English needs to be pretty good.  That doesn’t mean you have to be English, I’m not, but you have to know the language and its funny intricacies.   Sure, there’s a couple of classes you could take to make you a little bit better, but the reality is that you either have it, or you don’t.

Communication Is The Key To Success

What you need to be able to do is write things down as if you were speaking them.  Consider, for a minute, that I have written about 500 words here.  If you hold a conversation as long as the one I have just written down, will you be able to keep people silent for that length of time without being interrupted?  And if you are not getting interrupted, is that because your audience isn’t paying attention anymore?  Remember that my goal is to get you to perform some sort of magical last action.
